Deze keer staat Kristine Hymøller (1972 Kopenhagen) in de aandacht met haar expositie And where is my make-up in de jonge galerie Apice for artists in Amsterdam. Op 5 juni aanstaande is de opening.
What do we see? Three photographs that fundament my new animation Carved. In this free-moving construction the performers rotate, and combine wood boards in endless compositions. Each new position builds a range of visual, symbolic triumphant indications. In a way, this work refers to the (ancient) Olympic sports; a political tool used by city-states to assert dominance over their rivals. Also in my work, the elite body is exposed in its most sublime form, symbolising power, beauty and wealth.
Can you tell me something about your method? My point of departure is to create rhythm and synchronicity through various sculptural combinations. How can a shape be able to recall memory? We, as humans, naturally connect with and define ourselves through outlines and forms. My large-scale sculptures Girls-Room (2008) and Raft (2007) for example, are somehow floating in their own inner world, still mirroring male and female prominence. Through this co-active meeting between form, condition and in my latest work also posture and movement, I basically reveal a scenario that explores the space occupied by the body.
What fascinates you? I’m fascinated by city-infrastructure and how for example architecture is constructed in accordance to people's needs. The fact that society has for decades created a city comfort zone is in my opinion based on a system supporting power, beauty and wealth.
It is complex living in a “city-shaped” environment while trying to create a personal space and grasp freedom in any sense!
Whose work do you admire? I mainly seem to love works that encounter sculptural research, works that reflect curiosity and expands its predictive medium. I recently came across the artist duo Anna & Bernhard Blume, http://www.flickr.com/photos/pablosanz/sets/72157606124858348/ who’s photo-actions and sculptural investigation in relation to the body are really interesting. But also the cultural theorist Paul Virilio http://www.digischool.nl/ckv2/ckv3/kunstentechniek/virilio/Paul%20Virilio.htm. He writes about technology as it has developed in relation to speed and power with diverse references to architecture, the arts, the city and the military. In many ways, the story about the journey of humanity through architecture, urban planning, technology and art gets me excited.
